In a kid’s world, summer is the season of fun – vacations, playing outdoors, and staying up late. But doctors find the warm weather may usher in an unwelcome guest.
“Hand, foot and mouth disease is typically something we see in the summer time. It’s actually caused by a virus, the Coxsackie 16 virus,” explains Dr. Pierre Loredo, a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System.
Symptoms can be downright scary for parents.
“Your child is having a hard time swallowing; you see they’re in pain when they swallow. That could make you pretty nervous there. But when you look at the hand and soles and see a rash there then you would be really worried at that point.”
The condition follows a predictable pattern: first comes the sore throat along with a fever ranging from 101-103. In a day or two, the blisters appear around or in the mouth, hands, feet and sometimes buttock. Fortunately it’s easily treated.
“It’s a self-limiting illness it doesn’t require antibiotics because it’s not caused by a bacteria. We just give supportive care and the kids do completely fine.”
Hand, foot and mouth disease is a touchy condition, spread through saliva. Which is why it’s most common in children under five, when kids share drinks, toys and germs.
“You could also get it through droplets – you know kids sneezing on other kids; this type of thing. If someone touches something they could also pick up the hand, foot and mouth disease,” says Dr. Loredo.
The most contagious period is early on; by the time a child’s fever is under control and they are feeling better, it’s okay to rejoin their friends.
